Bacchus seeks redemption
(October 29, 2008)
With seven players from the University
of the East in its fold, Bacchus Energy Drink hopes
to shed its underdog tag in the 2009 PBL PG Flex Linoleum
Cup which fires off on Nov. 8 at the Ynares Sports Center
in Pasig.
“We hope the chemistry of my players
from UE will rub off on other players of the team,”
said coach Lawrence Chongson. “We’re doing
everything to jell early so that we can be a challenger
this time.”
Leading the team are UE’s Hans Thiele,
Mark Falmpulme, Parri Llagas , James Martinez, Rudy
Lingganay, Paul Lee and Val Acuna – all veterans
of the league except for the last three players.
Of the three, Lee is expected to get a
quality time. He’s tough as a nail guard and a
big offensive threat with his long bombs.
“They have the experience of playing
together so that’s going to be a plus factor for
us,” said Chongson. “I can only hope that
they can deliver and help their new teammates.”
The only other remnant of the team that
ended dead last in the previous conference was former
slam dunk champion Rey Gueverra of Letran. The new faces
are Khalif Fortune, Mark Canlas, Orly Daroya, JJ. Colina
and Rejan Lee of La Salle.
Unlike last conference, Chongson said
they will have a surprise package this time.
The long-haired coach, however, refused
to reveal the identity of the player he described as
fast, quick and deadly.
“Just wait until our first game,”
said Chongson.
Though they’re a bit shorter this
time, Chongson remains confident of their chances, saying:
“We will use our patience, determination and speed
to make up for our lack of height.”
“But we have to work doubly hard
to be competitive enough,” said Chongson.
