With Ross around, Pharex hopes to blossom this time
(October 27, 2008)
Is Fil-Am Chris Ross the right prescription
for the Pharex Medics?
Carlo Tan, the cool but creative Pharex
coach, thinks so.
“We’re now a bit matured but
more than that, we’re a little taller and deeper
right now than last year. And we know each other well
now,” said Tan when asked about their chances
for the coming 2009 PBL PG Flex Linoleum Cup.
But what excites Tan the most is the presence
of the cat-quick guard from Marshall University of Texas
whom they made the No. 1 pick in the recent Rookie Draft
held at the Ynares Sports Center in Pasig.
“He’s an athletic type of
a player and not a fancy one. His quickness and speed
will be his best weapon not to mention his creativity
and leadership,” said team owner Jappy Pascual
of the Pascual Laboratories – one of the country’s
leading pharmaceutical companies.
“He will bring stability to the
team,” added Tan of his 6-foot-1 guard.
Aside from Ross, the Pharex Medics also
signed up five other promising rookies in 6-foot-6 Michael
Galinato of Adamson, 6-foot-3 Ian Mazo, 6-foot-3 Raymund
Aguilar and 5-foot-9 John Meligrito of Letran.
Former slam-dunk king Elmer Espiritu of
University of the East will also be back to lead the
team whose main goal now is to reach the semis.
They also retained the services of Sean
Co, Don Villamin, JR Gerilla, Fritz Bauzon and Cebuano
hotshot Ian Saladaga.
Tan, however, emphasized that he’s
still in the process of cooking up the right chemistry
for the team that failed to get past the semis last
conference.
Still, Tan was satisfied with what they
achieved last conference considering that it was only
their second conference in the league.
“The highlight of our performance
last year was that we won seven times unlike during
our maiden campaign when we won only twice,” said
Tan. “With Ross around, we hope to have a good
run in the coming tournament.”
The Medics made a loud noise in the crucial
stage of the elims when they snapped the 10-game winning
run of Harbour Centre. Hopefully, they can make a sustained
noise this time around.
