PBL veterans showing the way in UAAP, NCAA
(July 14, 2008)
Veterans of PBL are off to flying starts
in both the UAAP and NCAA leagues.
The mighty show of PBL veterans underscored
the league’s status as the country’s top breeding ground
of future pro stars.
Just imagine the players who have created
great impact this early stage of the tournament.
Expect that to double as the tournament
wears on.
In the UAAP, JV Casio, the sparkplug of
Toyota Otis, sizzled for 29 points in La Salle’s 73-62
win over Far Eastern University last Saturday.
He was, of course, supported by Rico Maierhofer,
a key player of Harbour Centre, who made 11 points aside
from asserting his might down low.
Even La Salle coach Franz Pumaren was
awe-struck with Casio’s brilliant performance. “It was
a JV Casio show,” said Pumaren after their thrilling
win.
Also making big strides are UST’s own
version of BIG 3 – Dylan Ababou, Francis Allera and
reigning MVP Jervy Cruz.
Ababou, who also played for Harbour Centre,
exploded for 20 points in the team’s 94-75 win over
UP also last Saturday.
Cruz, the 6-foor-4 center for Hapee Toothpaste
and Allera, the rising star of the Pharex Medics, combined
for 26 points.
In the NCAA, it is RJ Jazul of Letran
who is on the rampage.
Just like Casio, Jazul is the other major
player of Toyota Otis.
Jazul is indeed a Knight in a shining
armor.
He was brilliant, deadly and amazing.
In the team’s second game – Jazxul torched
the St. Benilde Blazers with an eye-popping 37 points
– the biggest scoring production in the league since
2002. The Knights, of course, won the match, 88-75.
In a fitting follow-up to his scintillating
one-man show, Jazul scored 20 points to help Letran
score a 73-72 win over PCU for its third straight win.
Also dishing out fine performance from
the NCAA are Noosa Shoes’ Kevin dela Pena, Ogie Menor
of Magnolia and Borgy Hermida of Hapee.
